# Product Packaging QR Codes: Your Post-Print Update and Recovery Plan

To update a QR code already printed on packaging, change the destination behind its existing editable short link. Keep that short URL unchanged and test a real package after saving. This works only when the printed code already points to a link you control; a code containing a fixed destination cannot be rewritten remotely. Plan what shoppers should see after a promotion ends, who approves changes and how to recover from a broken destination before sending packaging to print.

## Start with the promise printed beside the code

A customer scanning a box marked Care instructions expects help with that product. Redirecting the same code to an unrelated sale may keep the URL working while breaking the customer's expectation. Write down the printed promise, product family and intended customer task before changing anything.

Separate essential product support from short-lived promotion messaging. A durable product page can provide care guidance and a clear route to the current offer. Treat the QR experience as an addition to the package, not a reason to remove information customers need on the physical product. Requirements vary by product and market; an ordinary marketing link is not a compliance system.

## Keep a small register of printed links

Create a shared working record with the product range, printed short URL, current destination, artwork version, responsible owner and last successful scan check. Add a fallback destination and the offer's end date where relevant. This is an operational worksheet your team maintains, not an automatic feature promised by the link platform.

Use separate links where products need different instructions. Two packages sharing one QR link will share its updated destination. Changing that link for a new model could confuse someone opening an older product. A single campaign link also cannot identify which individual physical box was scanned.

## Update the destination without replacing the printed link

In Share to Reach, select the existing link on the QR codes page and edit its destination. Paste the new public HTTPS page, check any campaign parameters and save. Preserve the existing short URL and QR artwork. Creating a new short link with the same title does not update codes already printed on packages.

Scan an actual package after the change, follow the redirect and complete the intended task on a phone. Confirm the page matches the product, loads without staff authentication and offers the expected support or catalogue. Have another person review important changes. If the new page fails, restore the previous known-working destination and test again.

## Give expired offers a useful next destination

Do not leave a limited-time promotion pointing to a deleted landing page. Prepare an evergreen destination that explains the promotion has ended and provides the product's normal information or support. Avoid presenting an expired discount as available. Record a reminder and an owner for the switch rather than assuming it will happen automatically.

An editable redirect still depends on a functioning link service, account and destination. If you use a custom domain, keep its registration and DNS working. Maintain an offline copy of the printed-link register so a team member can find the affected URL when a website is reorganized. No hosted redirect should be described as maintenance-free or guaranteed forever.

## Measure placements without overstating what a scan means

Decide the reporting question before printing. If you need to compare a package insert with a shelf card, give those placements separate links. Reusing the exact same code across both gives combined activity rather than a reliable placement comparison. Keep test scans documented when reviewing a small campaign.

For a landing page whose analytics you control, use consistent campaign parameters. An illustrative naming convention is utm_source=package_insert, utm_medium=qr and utm_campaign=care_guide. Keep names consistent across the campaign; these are your reporting labels, not a universal standard. Share to Reach supports optional campaign parameters alongside link creation.

Compare link activity with the destination's analytics and completed orders or support actions separately. Redirect requests, analytics sessions and purchases count different things. Consent choices, blocked scripts, repeated scans and automated requests can affect the numbers. UTMs on someone else's website do not give you access to that website's analytics.

## Know when a redirect cannot solve the problem

A destination update cannot repair unreadable printing, a damaged label or a code that encodes a different URL. Keep the QR symbol's clear margin intact: DENSO WAVE specifies four modules on each side. Test the final packaging material and shape, not just the design file. The separate printing checklist covers production checks in more detail.

An ordinary Share to Reach marketing QR code should not be presented as a GS1 Digital Link implementation, checkout barcode, authenticity check or item traceability system. GS1 describes a separate standards-based approach using product identifiers. Confirm your retail and supply-chain requirements with the relevant provider before replacing any existing product barcode.

## Questions
### Can I change a QR destination after packaging is printed?
Yes, if the printed QR points to an editable link you control. Update that existing link and retest a physical package. If it directly encodes a fixed website URL, the QR image itself cannot be remotely changed; you would need control of that website's redirect or replacement packaging artwork.

### Should every product use the same QR code?
Only when every product can safely share the same destination and combined reporting. Use separate links when instructions, product families or placement comparisons need to remain distinct. A shared code does not identify an individual package.

### What should happen when a packaging promotion ends?
Send visitors to an honest, useful page explaining the offer has ended, with access to normal product information or support. Assign someone to make and test the change. Do not silently substitute an unrelated offer for a printed promise.
